Now we start with the many birthday posts! The first birthday event, in what has turned out to be a four-week celebration extravaganza, was dinner with some coworkers at No.
In the fortnight leading up to the dinner, I literally called and emailed fifteen different restaurants trying to find a suitable one!
So many were closed, some only had set menus, some were only doing lunch, some places never got back to me, blah blah blah. At one point, I was even considering scrapping the idea and just having a dinner party!
But then Sandra, the voice of reason, simply said: "You don't want to be doing dishes on your birthday, just pick somewhere in Crown".
Bang, problem solved. So, next on my list was No. I had been to No. However, the menu looked good and when I googled it, I found quite a few positive posts from different bloggers.
All of the posts I found were write-ups of invited complimentary meals to showcase the new chef, so it's hard to say how closely the service they received would mirror what an ordinary punter would get.
However, lots of the posts were by bloggers who I've been following for a while, and whose food opinions I trust I Eat Therefore I Am , Iron Chef Shellie , The Chronicles of Ms I-Hua and The Boy , I'm So Hungreee , Poppet's Window and most importantly - the pictures of the food all looked good!
So, with all that out of the way, let's talk about our meal! We start with some very good beer and wheat bread, with butter. Made by Ed's Breads. I generally prefer a crustier bread, but we all still really enjoyed this.
But this was nothing like that at all. In fact, the total opposite! It was soft, fluffy and light!
Every bite you take, you would be able to taste the honey and the rosemary. Everyone loved it and even though we knew we would be stuffed by the end of the night, we asked politely of course!
The entree arrived and it was like a plate of edible garden. The Flowerdale Farm spring salad had a bed of wheat berries, topped with baby carrots, sunflower shoots and almond mushrooms.
Was so intriguing! John explained to us that when cooked, the nuttier flavour is more pronounced and had tones of the truffle. See the micro greens?
They are sunflower shoots that are once again grown exclusively for John by Flowerdale Farm and these micro greens are grown in the Yarra Valley and harvested after a short 7 days of growing.
Might probably be just me, but I get excited by micro herbs on dishes. Next up was one of my favourite dishes of the night. The Portland black and blue tuna with black garlic, yuzu jam and fermented aged soy.
Black and blue was a clever play of words, where one side of the tuna is charred and the other side is left raw. So light and refreshing, with a subtle kick from the aged soy.
This is one dish I would definitely come back for. With the sweetness of the baby radish and the thinly sliced daikon. Just divine! For the main, we were given a choice of duck or lamb.
So duck it was! The Milawa free range duck is once again bred exclusively for John a cross of 5 different species of ducks, like WOW! I was in heaven!

To top the night off, we were served some beautiful petit four of white chocolate truffles with toasted coconut and strawberry jam.
These reminded me of a more delicious version of a lamington! But I have to say the one dish that makes me excited even by looking at the photos is the Milawa duck breasts!
His passion is definitely inspiring! In fact, there would be a Coldstream Hills wine dinner that would be held at No. For more information, please click here.
So what are you waiting for? Head down and try the delicious food for yourself! We were lucky enough to be given a loaf of the delicious potato, honey and rosemary bread to enjoy it at home!
This is one bread that John Lawson himself cannot stop talking about and it is through months of testing with baker Ed Parker. So you know, it would be delish!

That Fibonacci Reihenfolge like such a wonderful meal! I would definitely rate No. Pingback: No. I would definitely recommend No. 8 by John Lawson to those looking for a great night out. Price wise, this is your midpoint fine dining restaurant, however the service is exceptional and for this, I would pay more money for. No 8 by John Lawson is situated on South Bank and our table was over looking the Yarra River. Chinese New Year celebrations were well under way so it wasn’t the most relaxing of tables but it was a fantastic spot to people watch, something I also love to do. Portland black & blue tuna, black garlic, almond mushrooms and aged soy. It was an incredibly hot summers day which meant our first glass of crisp chilled champagne went down in no time. Here is our recap from the relaunch of No.8 by John Lawson. Walking into the restaurant, it was nice to see that the layout with its wide open spaces and high ceilings had not been changed. The biggest draw in the looks department to me has always been the staircase leading up to the private function area and I’m glad they kept it.
